On November 1st 2008, the International Day of Star Watching was arbitrarily created. The Day is to be held on the First New Moon of August every year.

At 10:00 PM, regardless of time zone, every source of lighting that is susceptible to interfere with star watching must be shut off for One Hour.

The goal of this Day is to temporarily counteract the effects of urbanization, as cities are casting too much light in the sky, preventing stars to be seen to their fullest. This is also meant to be the occasion to fraternize with friends and family, for One Hour.
