Final Fantasy II/IV was one of my favorite video games as a child. I loved the world of Cecil and his friends and created a "sequel" of sorts using Mario Paint and my VCR. I was about twelve years old at the time. As of this writing, I'm 32. :) I remember wasting many hours using Game Genie codes to get a glitchy version of Golbez as a playable character. The game gave us just a hint of what a playable Golbez would be like, and darn it, I wanted more! This hack is my answer to that childhood dream. The hack alters events of the game such that Golbez joins the party after Cecil and friends destroy the Giant of Bab-il. Obviously this requires many other changes along the way, to the party lineup, to which characters are playable to begin with, and so forth. I don't want to spoil everything, but I will say upfront that Edge is no longer a playable character. One of the final five teammates had to go to make room for Golbez. I like Edge, but I find him to be the least vital of the final five characters to the overall storyline. Also, Edge is the character most similar to how I envision Golbez in terms of his stats, equipment, etc. So, Edge was the natural choice to be converted into a fully-playable Golbez. Edge is still a part of the game world, though. Trust me, he will pop up from time to time! Lots of other changes were made, too. Some are big and some are so small that you might never notice them. The changes are largely cosmetic up until Cecil reaches Toroia, and become more pronounced after Cid rescues the team from the Tower of Bab-il. Here are a few of the more significant changes. 1.) These items were removed to make room for new items: - Cloth robe - Cap helmet - Cursed ring - Ninja robe - all Axe weapons - all Katana weapons - all Boomerang weapons - all items only usable with Edge's throwing ability 2.) Many item, spell, and monster names were updated to make them consistent with naming conventions used in more recent Final Fantasy games. 3.) Some rebalancing was done to equipment power, item costs, spell MP costs, and so forth. The changes tend to be mild. 4.) Shop inventories were extensively updated. However, I tried to keep the general feel of each shop intact. 5.) All commands and spells that were dummied out of the original American release of Final Fantasy II/IV were restored. 6.) The script was polished and many instances of "Engrish" were removed. "You spoony bard!" was intentionally retained. 7.) There are a LOT of surprises in store! However, I think you will find that my hack stays true to the spirit of the original game. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * +--------------------+ | | | Setup Instructions | | | +--------------------+ You will need the golbezHack11-21-11.ips file as well as an unaltered copy of the Final Fantasy II SNES American release ROM. Please do not ask me for a copy of the ROM; I will not provide one. I recommend using the Lunar IPS utility to apply the patch to the ROM. As of this writing, you can download Lunar IPS here: http://fusoya.eludevisibility.org/lips/ To apply the patch: 1.) Open Lunar IPS and click the Apply IPS Patch button. 2.) Select the golbezHack11-21-11.ips file. 3.) Select the ROM. 4.) You're all set! It's that easy! As far as which emulator to use, I personally like ZSNES, even though it does not display this game's message window properly. ZSNES has its own website: http://www.zsnes.com/ * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * +------------+ | | | Known Bugs | | | +------------+ There are three known bugs as of this release. I would like to remedy all of them in future releases. However, the reason these bugs were not handled in the first place is because I do not know how to fix 'em! None of these bugs affect playability or stability. 1.) Golbez does not display properly inside the Chocobo Forests or the Chocobo Village. Simply switch the visible map character to someone other than Golbez while in these locations. The problem will automatically correct upon returning to the world map. 2.) Golbez does not display properly when loading a saved game at a dungeon save point. Golbez will appear as a solid black shape. Exiting to the world map remedies the problem. Moving from the Lunar Subterrane to the Lunar Core also fixes the problem. 3.) Many of the formerly dummied-out commands display blank message windows when executed. Specifically, these commands are: - Power (Yang) - Gird (Yang) - Bluff (Palom) - Tears (Porom) - Regen (FuSoYa) I would like to disable these message windows altogether, as they serve no real purpose to begin with, but I don't know how to make edits of this type to commands. Please contact me immediately if you find any additional bugs. This hack has been thoroughly play-tested, but... you never know.
